The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans had similar regular seasons. Both teams had rocky starts to the year — Colts (1-5) and Texans (0-3) — before going on impressive winning streaks.
Before it was all said and done, the divisional foes from the AFC South each finished with 10 or more wins. The Texans (11-5) did manage to edge out the Colts (10-6) by one game, but the two regular-season matchups between them were split 1-1.
What’s makes things more interesting is that both teams won on the road by exactly three points. Does that mean that Indianapolis actually has the advantage in this game despite having to travel to NRG Stadium in Houston?
While these two teams have faced each other 34 times because they are division rivals, this will be their postseason encounter.
Indianapolis at Houston
Kickoff: Saturday, Jan. 5 at 4:35 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN/ABC
Spread: Houston -1.5
1. Andrew Luck vs. Deshaun Watson, Part III
The flow of the regular season isn’t the only thing the Colts and Texans have in common. As opposed to the other two teams in the AFC South, the two making an appearance in the playoffs have a consistent, franchise quarterback in place.
In other words, the most important position on the field is already taken care of, which makes a path to the postseason a lot easier.
The statistical success that each of these quarterbacks has seen against the other’s defense is fairly significant. Luck has thrown for 863 yards and six touchdowns while only tossing one interception in the first two meetings. Watson hasn’t been quite that impressive, but he’s still put up 719 total yards (642 passing, 77 rushing) and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). The Clemson product has also completed 70 percent of his passes over those two performances.
If either team’s quarterback struggles, that could cause a lopsided victory in the other’s favor.
2. Which team’s offensive line can hold up the best?
If there’s one stark difference between the Colts and the Texans, it’s been the performance of the offensive lines. Indianapolis made a commitment in the offseason to get more protection for Luck, while the Texans – for the most part – continued to neglect the issue after missing out on left tackle Nate Solder in free agency.
The results have been significant, especially in the two matchups that these teams have already had. Quenton Nelson and Braden Smith have contributed to a unit that went on a five-game streak without giving up a sack. Against Houston, the Colts yielded did four sacks in the first game, but only surrendered two in the second.
Houston’s offensive line has been the polar opposite. On the season, this group has given up 62 sacks, which is the most in the NFL. Included in those were 12 courtesy of Indianapolis in just two games with Denico Autry (four), Darius Leonard and Margus Hunt (two each) particularly involved. Some of those fall on Watson holding onto the ball for too long, but there’s no doubt this unit is one of – if not – the worst in the league.
3. Colts have been hotter down the stretch
Houston and Indianapolis went toe-to-toe for the second time back in Week 14. It was a hard-fought battle, but the Colts left NRG Stadium with a 27-24 win.
Since then, they’ve outscored their opponents by an average score of 28-15. Included in that stretch was a 23-0 home shutout of NFC East champion Dallas. And Indianapolis punched its playoff ticket with a 16-point road win in Tennessee in Week 17 that pushed Luck’s record to 11-0 against the Titans during his career.
With four straight wins, the Colts and the Chicago Bears have the longest current winning streaks in the NFL, so Indianapolis could be viewed as one of the most dangerous teams in the AFC bracket. Houston’s success shouldn’t be ignored, however. Despite losing 32-20 in Philadelphia in Week 16, the Texans went 10-2 after starting the season 0-4. They closed out the regular season with a convincing 20-3 victory over the Jaguars.
It’s going to be interesting to see which team continues to carry its momentum into this game.

Final Analysis
This game should be one of the better ones during Wild Card Weekend. It features a pair of division rivals, led by two high-profile quarterbacks going head-to-head to determine whose team gets to keep its Super Bowl hopes alive.
Can J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney and the rest of Houston’s defensive front seven be the difference-maker in this game? Forcing Indianapolis’ offense to being one-dimensional hasn’t exactly put a strain on Andrew Luck this season, but the playoffs are a different style of football.
At the end of the day, the Colts do a better job of protecting their franchise signal-caller and give him enough time to make plays. The over/under has steadily increased to 48.5, which seems to be a hair too much, especially since I think the road team ends up winning.
Prediction: Colts 27, Texans 21

When the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks met in Week 3, no one thought the game would be a playoff preview. Fast forward four months and the two teams are set to face off in a Wild Card matchup in Dallas on Saturday night sitting just a few wins away from making the Super Bowl.
Both teams have changed a lot since that meeting in September, which Seattle won 24-13 on its home turf. The Seahawks, who started the year 0-2 and were 4-5 at one point, went 6-1 in their last seven games to finish with a 10-6 record.
Russell Wilson has once again proven himself to be one of the league’s top quarterbacks. He’s tied for third in passing touchdowns (35) and is third in passer rating (110.9).
And unlike the previous two seasons, Wilson has a strong backfield behind him. Second-year running back Chris Carson is fifth in the league in rushing yards (1,153) and tied for seventh in rushing touchdowns (nine).
To go along with the strong offensive performance, Seattle’s defense has been just as good. Defensive end Frank Clark is sixth in the league in sacks (14) and is tied for sixth in forced fumbles (four). Linebacker Bobby Wagner is fourth in combined tackles (138), leading a Seahawks defense that is 11th in defensive scoring (21.7 points per game).
Following the Week 3 loss to the Seahawks, the Cowboys fell to 1-2. Dallas eventually fell to 3-5 and its offense was looking bleak.
Insert Amari Cooper. In a mid-season trade with the Oakland Raiders, the Cowboys received Cooper for a first-round draft pick. The move revitalized the Cowboys offense, leading them to go 7-1 in the second half of the season and giving them a 10-6 record and the NFC East crown.

Cooper has 53 catches for 725 yards and six touchdowns over a nine-game stretch. Dak Prescott has had a strong second half, throwing for 1,871 yards, 11 touchdowns with a 96.7 passer rating.
The improved passing game helped complete the Cowboys offense. Ezekiel Elliott had another good season, finishing first in rushing yards (1,434) and rushing yards per game (95.6).
Coupled with their offense, Dallas has a strong defense. Rookie linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is third in combined tackles (140) and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had 10.5 sacks this season. They lead a Cowboys defense that ranks seventh in the league and sixth in scoring (20.3 points allowed per game).
Will we get a repeat of Week 3 or can the Cowboys improved offense carry them into the Divisional Round?
Seahawks vs. Cowboys head-to-head stats
Russell Wilson is third in the league in passer rating (110.9). More specifically, Wilson has a perfect passer rating (158.3) when he targets Tyler Lockett. He and Lockett have connected 57 times for 965 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Cowboys passing defense is 22nd in opponent passer rating (95.7).
Wilson has the Cowboys’ number as he is 4-1 against them in his career, including winning his last three games against them.
Seattle leads the league in rushing (160 yards per game). The Seahawks go up against a strong rush defense in Dallas, who is fifth in rushing yards allowed (94.6 rushing yards allowed per game).
The strongest part of Dallas’ offense is its running game. Ezekiel Elliott leads the league in rushing yards per game (95.6). Seattle is middle-of-the-pack in rushing defense, ranked 13th in rushing yards allowed per game (113.2).
Dallas hasn’t done a good job at protecting Dak Prescott. The Cowboys have allowed the second-most sacks in the league (56). Seattle is tied for 11th in sacks (43).
Seahawks vs. Cowboys betting odds
The Cowboys are two-point favorites at home. The over/under is set at 43.5 points.

NFL: Sunday, December 30, 2018, Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin, 1:00 PM ET
The Detroit Lions are traveling to the Lambeau Field looking to avoid the fifth defeat in six games but it’s not going to be easy against the divisional rivals who are hoping to end the season with a win in front of their own fans. On the other hand, the Green Bay Packers responded to a three-game losing streak with two victories in the last three games and they are hoping to get revenge for a loss to the Lions earlier in the season.
The Lions scored season-low nine points in a defeat to the Vikings

Detroit is in a poor form lately as they suffered seven losses in the previous nine games including the last two to the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. The Lions played relatively well in the first half as they scored nine points but it turned out to be all from them as the Vikings kept them off the scoreboard in the second 30 minutes, winning the clash, 27-9. Both Detroit’s rushing and passing were pretty much toothless in this one as they recorded 86 and 161 yards, respectively, which is below their season average, while they ended the tilt without scoring a single touchdown. Kenny Golladay led the Lions in receiving yards (58 on six catches) but he missed practice sessions this week due to a chest injury and might not be able to face the Packers, which would be a huge blow for Stafford and Detroit’s passing game. The visitors also have problems at the back as the defensive back Quandre Diggs is suffering from a back injury and could be sidelined for the game with Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers are looking to end 2018 on a high note. They got their first road win of the season last week against the New York Jets, and they now get the chance to extend their winning streak to two over the Detroit Lions they have dominated at home over the last two decades. If Aaron Rodgers plays, they will have an excellent chance to make that happen. The Dairyland Talk guys discussed that and more on this episode.
On Wednesday, the Packers interviewed two former Indianapolis Colts coaches in Chuck Pagano and Jim Caldwell. The various forms of Packers’ social media were immediately in a frenzy to figure out the odds of either of them being hired for the Packers. Both have head coaching and playoff work under their belt. While they weren’t hot topics in the initial discussions of the Packers candidates, they are now firmly in the running to be the next head coach.
Joe Philbin has coached the team to a 2-1 record since taking over for Mike McCarthy. Granted, those two wins are over two of the lower tier teams in the NFL this season, and the lone loss was against the division-winning Chicago Bears. He has done a better job than expected since taking over, but he is still very similar to McCarthy, which works against him. The Packers chose to move on from McCarthy, and Philbin would keep them in the same coaching family.
The Lions have underwhelmed this year in the first year of the Matt Patricia coaching era, but they have shown flashes at times. Against the Packers earlier this year, the passing game looked borderline elite, but it is a different group at this stage. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay has cooled off, Golden Tate is in Philadelphia and Kerryon Johnson is on injured reserve. If the Lions are able to win this week, both of the Dairyland guys will be wrong with the predictions they made.

Can the Green Bay Packers snap their road woes this afternoon when they take on the New York Jets at 1PM ET?
Game Snapshot & Odds
117 Green Bay Packers at 118 New York Jets
Sunday, December 23, 2018
1PM ET – MetLife Stadium
TV: FOX
Public Betting Trends
According to oddsmakers at BetNow.eu, the Packers are the slight favorite on the road, as they are getting odds of -3 points against the Jets. The over/under total for the contest is listed at 47 points. The public betting for this game currently has 63 percent going on the Packers as the road favorite.
Jets in a big funk
The New York Jets are coming off a 29-22 loss at home to Houston last week for its seventh loss in eight games. New York is now 4-10 on the season, 2-5 at home, 5-8-1 against the spread and 9-5 with the over. Despite the losses, New York is 2-0-1 against the spread in its last three.
New York has one of the worst offenses in the league. The Jets average just 20.9 points and 297.9 yards per game. The team is down to its third-string RB in Elijah McGuire, who has rushed for just 200 yards this year. Rookie QB Sam Darnold has thrown for 2,357 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, but also has 15 interceptions. Defensively, the Jets are giving up 25.6 points and 369.4 yards per game this year. The unit does have 13 interceptions and 34 sacks.
Packers winless on the road
The Green Bay Packers suffered their fourth loss in five games last week in a 24-17 loss at Chicago. The Packers are 5-8-1 on the season, 0-7 on the road, 5-8-1 against the spread and 7-7 with the over/under total. They are just 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games.
The Pack have respectable numbers on offense this year, averaging 23.7 points and 370.7 yards per game despite the poor record. The team has battled a lot of injuries throughout the year up front and at the skill positions. Still, Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 3,974 yards and 23 touchdowns with two interceptions. Davante Adams has 100 catches for 1,315 yards and 12 touchdowns. Defensively, Green Bay is giving up 23.6 points and 349.9 yards per game. They do have 41 sacks as a group.
NFL Betting Trends
New York
The Jets are 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games in December, but 0-3-1 ATS in their last four home games.
Green Bay

The Packers are 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games in December.

Prediction:
Green Bay hasn’t been an impressive team most of the season and their road efforts have been especially lackluster. New York certainly isn’t a special team either, but the Jets have played competitive the last three weeks and I think they will play up for this game today behind their rookie QB. The Packers are out of the mix and don’t need to risk their star quarterback in Rodgers. The Jets would still like to see Darnold and the young talent take a step forward. I think motivation is on the side of New York today.

The NFL’s oldest rivalry will add another chapter when Chicago hosts Green Bay on Sunday. These two teams last played way back in Week 1 and plenty has happened since that game. The Bears (9-4) need just one more victory to clinch the NFC North while the Packers (5-7-1) are playing under an interim head coach following the firing of Mike McCarthy.
It’s safe to say this isn’t what everyone expected coming out of the season-opening matchup on “Sunday Night Football” as Green Bay stormed back at home from a 20-0 deficit to win 24-23. Khalil Mack made his Chicago debut by wreaking havoc and harassing Aaron Rodgers all night. Rodgers briefly left the game with an injury, but he returned in the second half to fuel the comeback and by the end of the night it looked like the Packers were kings of the NFC North again.
But much has changed since that Sept. 9 night. The Bears have gone 9-3 claiming victories over the Rams, Seahawks and Vikings along the way. Green Bay has won just four games over its past 12, including losing the Redskins, Lions and even the lowly Cardinals at home. Following that loss to Arizona two weeks ago, McCarthy was dismissed after 13 years as the head coach. Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is serving as interim head coach.
While the Packers are more focused on next season, they can still play the role of spoiler with Chicago just a win away from its first NFC North title since 2010. The Bears are 6-1 at Soldier Field, while Green Bay is 0-6 on the road. But as fans of both of these teams know, you can throw out the records when these archrivals meet on the gridiron.
Green Bay at Chicago
Kickoff: Sunday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Bears -5.5
Three Things to Watch
1. Bears’ defense is dominant
Last week, Chicago stopped the Los Angeles Rams’ offense cold. Ranked third in the league in scoring (32.7 ppg), the Bears held Jared Goff and company to just six points and 214 total yards while forcing four turnovers. Prior to this game, the fewest points Los Angeles had scored in a game was 23 (Week 6 at Denver) and its fewest total yards were 339 (Week 7 at San Francisco). Goff in particular had a rough night, completing just 20 of 44 pass attempts for 180 yards with four interceptions while getting sacked three times, one of those for a safety. Todd Gurley managed just 28 rushing yards as the Rams went 3-for-12 on third down and were held scoreless over the final 34:12 of the game.
Green Bay has had its own offensive struggles. Even though the Packers beat Atlanta last week 34-20, Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times and the ground attack has averaged fewer than 92 yards over the past four games. The Week 1 victory over Chicago was all about Rodgers throwing the ball (286 yards, 3 TDs) but the Bears have allowed just one opponent since to pass for that many yards.
Chicago’s defense has improved since the teams’ first meeting while Green Bay has gone in the opposite direction. The Bears’ defense will be looking to bring the pain to Rodgers and company (as well as snap his NFL record for the most passes without an interception) on Sunday.
2. Run Bears run
Against the Rams, Jordan Howard had his first 100-yard rushing game (101) since Week 14 of last season. Tarik Cohen added another 69 yards (plus 20 receiving yards) and the Bears finally showcased the potent one-two punch on the ground that everyone had envisioned since the start of the season. Head coach Matt Nagy may want to stick to this game plan against a Green Bay defense that’s giving up 126.2 rushing yards per game (24th in the NFL) and has seen that number rise to nearly 139 over its last four contests. Running the ball is key this late in the season (and on into the postseason), and Chicago has the tools to do just that.
3. Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers
Despite this year’s struggles, good old No. 12 continues to throw the ball consistently and accurately. He’s sixth in the NFL in passing yards per game (285), has thrown at least one touchdown pass in every game this season (23 total), and hasn’t thrown an interception since Week 4. In fact, last week he broke Tom Brady’s record for the most pass attempts without an interception. His mark stands at 368 entering Sunday’s game. Even with all of the Packers’ issues, Rodgers is still feared for his ability to make something out of nothing and he’s been a thorn in the Bears’ side for many years. Just look at what happened in Week 1 to know how Green Bay’s success against Chicago starts and ends with Rodgers.

In particular, the Bears haven’t sacked him more than twice in a game since Week 7 of the 2016 season (had two in Week 1) and they haven’t intercepted him since ’15. Those are two things that Khalil Mack and company will try and do this time around to break a five-game losing streak to the Packers.

Final Analysis
To no one’s surprise, Chicago and Green Bay have faced each other with playoff implications on the line several times. While the Bears have failed in their last four attempts to either clinch a division title, a playoff berth or eliminate the Packers from postseason contention (twice in 2010, ’12 and ’13), the tide seems to be turning.
For one, most of the players on Chicago’s roster were not a part of these past failures or are taking the lead of their first-year head coach Matt Nagy.
Instead, the Bears are focused on winning the NFC North and getting back to the playoffs. It doesn’t hurt that for the first time in a while they are the favorites heading into this game.
As long as Aaron Rodgers is on the field, he will make things difficult for the Bears. But Chicago’s been near unbeatable at home while Green Bay hasn’t won away from Lambeau Field this season. The Bears end their long losing streak to their archrivals and claim a division title in the process.
Prediction: Bears 27, Packers 24

"Thursday Night Football" makes its way to CenturyLink Field this week as the Seattle Seahawks (4-5) host the Green Bay Packers (4-4-1). When these two teams get together you can throw out the records as they seem to always play a dramatic game in Seattle. This should set up FOX/NFL Network nicely as Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are two superstar quarterbacks who will draw in casual fans to check this game out which will pay off in a nice ratings bump.

The Seahawks put up a great fight down in Los Angeles against the Rams as they lost a hard-fought 36-31 contest last week. Rashaad Penny had a breakthrough performance back in his native Southern California as Penny rushed for 108 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. Penny showed a lot of the flashes of potential against a tough Los Angeles defense that prompted Seattle to use a first-round pick on him in the 2018 draft. Mike Davis also chipped in 58 yards as the Seahawks' offensive line did an excellent job of run blocking as part of a 273-yard performance on Sunday. Tyler Lockett continues to show the NFL that he is a clutch playmaker with five catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Wilson almost worked his magic on the last drive, but the Rams rose to the occasion and held the Seahawks out of the end zone.

Green Bay snapped a two-game losing streak, routing Miami 31-12. The Packers responded nicely after losing to the Rams and the Patriots by getting back to basics. Aaron Jones led a powerful rushing attack with 145 yards and two touchdowns. This took some pressure of Rodgers as he didn’t need to win the game by himself, and it paid off as Green Bay scored 31 points taking pressure off the defense. Speaking of the Packers defense, it had its way with Brock Osweiler as the Dolphins could not generate enough big plays in the passing game all day long. Now the question for Green Bay is, can it take this formula on the road? The Packers are 0-4 so far this season away from Lambeau Field.

Green Bay at Seattle

Kickoff: Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8:20 p.m. ET

TV: FOX/NFL Network

Spread: Seahawks -3

Three Things to Watch

1. Seahawks' offensive balance

The ability to continually run the football, especially in the month of November and December is going to set the tone for the rest of the Seattle offense this season. Whether it's Chris Carson, who is quickly establishing himself as a running back that you don’t want to tackle when he is healthy, or the combo of Penny and Davis, running the football must come first for the Seahawks on Thursday night. This will set up Wilson in the play-action passing game to really go to work against a Packers secondary that is beat up right now due to multiple injuries. Also, getting Wilson out in space to use his legs running the ball will be important as well as he will need to get some first downs against the Green Bay defense with his legs to counteract guys like Mike Daniels along the defensive front. Daniels had a field day last year against the Seattle offensive line as he had 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for a loss and four quarterback hits on Wilson.

2. Protecting Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy leaned heavily on the running game against the Dolphins and will need to do more of the same against the Seattle defense. The Packers have some uncertainty health wise at wide receiver as it’s not a guarantee that Randall Cobb will be back this week as he is still battling a hamstring pull. Two young rookies Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown will need to continue to emerge as top targets for Rodgers to throw to in the passing game. Scantling has caught 23 passes for 402 yards and two touchdowns and will probably be matched up against Shaquill Griffin or Justin Coleman on Thursday night. Offensive line play has been an issue in the past for Green Bay in Seattle as the crowd helping propel the defensive line to create extra pressure on Rodgers. Thursday night should be more of the same as the Seahawks fans will be amped up ready to go with plenty of crowd noise. So look for a potential use of tempo if the Packers can stay on schedule on offense and not give up unnecessary sacks to Frank Clark and the rest of the Seahawks defensive line.

3. The "Thursday Night Football" effect

Both teams come into this game with plenty to play for as Green Bay is not out of the NFC North race let alone the NFC Wild Card picture. Seattle needs to hold serve at home against the Packers and try to steal one next week in Carolina to get to 6-5 heading into a very home-heavy slate of games in December. Overall, home teams have fared very well on Thursday Night Football this season as they are 8-2 and have often blown out their opponents especially over the last couple of weeks. This means it is beyond critical for the Seahawks to get off to a fast start this week as they are a team that feeds off momentum especially at home. For Green Bay, they need to get over the mental hurdle of being winless on the road this season in 2018. If the Packers can start well or even just keep the game at a 10-7 type of score in the first half, it will allow Rodgers and the offense to settle in and try to win it late as Seattle has had issues finishing games out this season.

Final Analysis

These two teams should provide a rare competitive Thursday Night Football game for the nation this week. Wilson will do just enough in the passing game to keep Green Bay’s defense on its heels. The running game will continue to be very effective for the Seahawks, and defensively they will be giving up yards but do enough in the red zone to slow down the Packers and win a one-score game.

Prediction: Seahawks 28, Packers 24
