NFL: Sunday, December 30, 2018, Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin, 1:00 PM ET
The Detroit Lions are traveling to the Lambeau Field looking to avoid the fifth defeat in six games but it’s not going to be easy against the divisional rivals who are hoping to end the season with a win in front of their own fans. On the other hand, the Green Bay Packers responded to a three-game losing streak with two victories in the last three games and they are hoping to get revenge for a loss to the Lions earlier in the season.
The Lions scored season-low nine points in a defeat to the Vikings
Detroit is in a poor form lately as they suffered seven losses in the previous nine games including the last two to the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. The Lions played relatively well in the first half as they scored nine points but it turned out to be all from them as the Vikings kept them off the scoreboard in the second 30 minutes, winning the clash, 27-9. Both Detroit’s rushing and passing were pretty much toothless in this one as they recorded 86 and 161 yards, respectively, which is below their season average, while they ended the tilt without scoring a single touchdown. Kenny Golladay led the Lions in receiving yards (58 on six catches) but he missed practice sessions this week due to a chest injury and might not be able to face the Packers, which would be a huge blow for Stafford and Detroit’s passing game. The visitors also have problems at the back as the defensive back Quandre Diggs is suffering from a back injury and could be sidelined for the game with Green Bay.
The Green Bay Packers are looking to end 2018 on a high note. They got their first road win of the season last week against the New York Jets, and they now get the chance to extend their winning streak to two over the Detroit Lions they have dominated at home over the last two decades. If Aaron Rodgers plays, they will have an excellent chance to make that happen. The Dairyland Talk guys discussed that and more on this episode.
On Wednesday, the Packers interviewed two former Indianapolis Colts coaches in Chuck Pagano and Jim Caldwell. The various forms of Packers’ social media were immediately in a frenzy to figure out the odds of either of them being hired for the Packers. Both have head coaching and playoff work under their belt. While they weren’t hot topics in the initial discussions of the Packers candidates, they are now firmly in the running to be the next head coach.
Joe Philbin has coached the team to a 2-1 record since taking over for Mike McCarthy. Granted, those two wins are over two of the lower tier teams in the NFL this season, and the lone loss was against the division-winning Chicago Bears. He has done a better job than expected since taking over, but he is still very similar to McCarthy, which works against him. The Packers chose to move on from McCarthy, and Philbin would keep them in the same coaching family.
The Lions have underwhelmed this year in the first year of the Matt Patricia coaching era, but they have shown flashes at times. Against the Packers earlier this year, the passing game looked borderline elite, but it is a different group at this stage. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay has cooled off, Golden Tate is in Philadelphia and Kerryon Johnson is on injured reserve. If the Lions are able to win this week, both of the Dairyland guys will be wrong with the predictions they made.
